Foid turnaround time

I filled out my application at a reputable gun shop in southwestern illinois, they checked it, took my photo, & my money and mailed it off on Oct 18th 2014. about Nov 18th 2014 I went to the illinois state police page found foid status send a message link and sent a messaging requesting status. As of December 1st 2014 I have not any response.

On Nov 30th 2014 I found the united states congressman for my district (William Enyart) and through his website verified my zipcode with the extra 4 digits to make sure I was actually in his district. After verification I was then authorized to proceeded to the contact my office link, selected the gun topic and wrote what I had mentioned above and requesting assistance with my application status. As of Dec 1st 2014 No Response.

I'm 34 years old. I've never been in trouble with "the law" EVER. I've worked with the federal government as a contractor (admin accountant), department of education, department of agriculture, i've worked in bank vaults with millions of dollars passing my hands daily. I want to defend myself at home, I want to plank, I want to collect, I want to appreciate my rights.

I can sure get authorization to do those types of assignments in 2-3 days. yet i'm going to have apparently wait till i'm 36 and check the mail box daily until then for someone to finally establish a modern way of processing criminal back ground checks and then reapply....

NOTE TO GOVERNMENT I WOULD GLADLY PAY EXTRA FOR EXPEDITED SERVICE.

Thanks to apparently a delay I missed some good sales. The process of purchasing my first firearm has been pretty crappy. Really. I live alone near st louis (in illinois) I have zero protection in my home and I feel like my 2nd amendment right is PENDING.

To be continued....

You are aware there is a number you can call and talk to a real person who will give you the status of your app while you are on the phone, right?

Sone things just can't be done as well in the internet as in person. Give it a try.

I can't believe you would contact your congressman before picking up a phone and calling the FOID/CCL hotline number.

Obiejaun ill keep you posted too.

Ljnowel I work 9-5 m-f. After hearing how frustrating it is to actually get a real person on the phone I'm going to let my district congressman's office make that call. I'm holding the administrators accountable for upholding the time frame set forth by law. It was suggested from others in the same situation to do so. If they are making 10$ a pop they should have more than enough resources to up hold their end of the law and needs to be reported and corrected if they are in violation.

Many of us work 9-5. If you haven't even tried to call them you really sound silly contacting your congressman and going through all of that.

If you want to make life more difficult for yourself, have at it. People do it every day. Be prepared for your congressmans office to ask you "have you called the FOID hotline?"

Then you can explain that you have a bad temper and called them instead so they could be held accountable.

Agree with prior posters recommending a phone call to the Firearm Services Bureau first.

But if you do want to pursue congressional intervention, you might have better luck contacting your state representative for help instead of your U.S. congressman. I doubt Rep Enyart is likely to intervene in a state matter. (Besides, he lost the election and is on his way out, too...)

It may sound silly to some and that's okay. My standards and expectations are reasonable. FOID system should be a well oiled machine by now. Something is off and i'm going to relay my experience/feedback/concerns otherwise things will remain the same. Maybe in 10 years when I have to reapply I will be impressed and satisfied instead of waiting and checking the mail box after 30 days wondering if my paperwork was processed...

Interesting update. I called the ISP FOID Section by phone at 217-782-7980 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CST Monday through Friday.

On my first smoke break I called the FOID hotline and a lady answered. Explained that it was over 30 days and was checking status of my application. She requested driver license number (which I forgot in my desk) so she attempted to check my name. Advised that nothing came up in her system and to call back with my DL number....

On my lunch break. I called my gun shop and explained that the FOID people could not location my application and requested date information was sent and was given something better. She checked and the check they sent was cashed on Nov 4th and gave me a reference number.

On my last break I called the FOID hotline again and a different lady advised that my application was just entered into the system today... and that it is pending the background check and could take up to 60 days. but because it's in the system to check back next week.

Apparently the first lady found my application and processed it (thankfully)

WOW what happened to 30 days... See this is what happens when feedback not given.

My suggestion would be to call and if beyond the 30 day time frame raise heck....

Yikes my bad. He's pro gun maybe he has some influence? I doubt anything will come from that but never know.

1st off welcome to Illinois.

Just as a FYI, #1the ISP cashing the check just means they got the check and want money. It has nothing to do with how fast they will respond or how they will respond. They cashed a check for my niece back when they were illegally refusing to issue FOIDs to children under a certain age despite their parents signing for the children's FOID as allowed by law.

#2 "My standards and expectations are reasonable. FOID system should be a well oiled machine by now." Maybe elsewhere, I do not know, but here in Illinois others may view you expectations differently, quite possibly as being unreasonable. This is after all about guns and we cannot be too careful now can we? Violating state law is OK because "Its for the children".

If you want to help Illinois 2A rights come on down to IGOLD '15, we could use all the help we can get.

At day 31 I called my state senators office. Told them that after 40 years with a card I was about to become a felon due to the inability of the ISP to process a card under the time frame of the law.

Would you be able to help me with this issue. I was told they would check and get back to me in 2

days. They called the next day and told me that my new FOID was being printed as we speak and it

would get to me within 7 days. It came in 4. Don't screw around, if you don't get it in 30 days get someone on it.

Also, given all the horror stories I hear about how long getting a FOID can take (even though they are supposed to approve/deny within 30) I can't help but think: if you're going to be applying for a CCL too - I think it may even be better to apply for both at the same time (since you can do that), because then if they issue the CCL (which believe it or not they seem to have been really good with meeting deadlines for the most part) then they would have to issue to FOID too, no? Because you can't have a CCL without a FOID...

If anyone has applied for FOID & CCL at the same time, please chime in :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally received my FOID Card.

I filled out the application on October 18, 2014. Received FOID Card December 16th.... 30 days right... I believe it would have taken longer if I did not call 30 days in because the first time I called at day 30 they did not have my application. a few hours later I called and by some miracle my application was entered into system and was a pending status. It was supposedly printed December 12. I received it on December 16th.. What gets me is even the foid people stated several times that it takes 30-60 days to process it. Did not read that in the terms...

I'm good till 2024 thankfully... Glock 22 here I come.

The FOID turn around times are much better today then they were years ago.

I originally got my first FOID in the Bush W era, way before Obama and the huge rush to buy guns.

It took nearly six months to arrive after they cashed my check.

Fast forward to a year ago when I had to renew it. I got it in two weeks.

Just be patient and wait a bit. You'll get it.
