Question on selling Old Python

Looking for advice on the best way to go about selling a very nice 1960s Colt Python for a friend of the family. The gun belonged to her husband and has been in storage for years. She is looking to sell this and a couple of other pieces that are very nice. I reached out to Rock Island and they make it pretty easy, but also get a huge percentage for the effort. Looking for suggestions on how to maximize her return, I know that the python market has been very hot and dont want her to get taken advantage of. Is there someone local that would give an honest appraisal? It is a 6 blued .357 that dates to 1964, in very good condition but no box.

Thanks in advance!

I would be glad to help out but yeah pictures are needed.. completeness, barrel length. finish year made all that stuff matters when looking at price and value. I would not recommend consignment because you can get more with other areas such as direct sales or gum broker

Also as Colt Guy mentioned there are some good forums out there as well that I’m a member of too. Glad to help you try to evaluate it.

I just re-read the original post a 6 inch blue python from the 60s with original grips in very valuable significantly

I did a search on gun broker for 1960s 6 inch pythons that were blued. Python prices have softened especially for unboxed shooters.

https://www.gunbroker.com/Revolvers/search/completed?Keywords=Python 196*&PageSize=48&Sort=1&View=2&Ch-BarrelLength=6 inch&Ch-FrameFinish=Blued&Timeframe=1

However there were only a couple that actually SOLD

1 this one sold for $1100 but no original stocks https://www.gunbroker.com/item/821832918

2 and this 1967 sold for $1523 what did have original Stocks https://www.gunbroker.com/item/819679532

So that would probably be a good range but I saw pix and likely higher as it does look nice....A bit more If you have authentic police leather / holster

I would get an appraisal and sell it yourself on Gun Broker.

You might get more selling it on consignment through a local shop for the right buyer but odds are it will sit for quite some time.

They have a very similar Python that's been at one of my local gun stores @ $2K for about a year now.

I usually ask for these pix of 5 key areas including: Breech Face, Forcing Cone, Cylinder Face/crane area, Cylinder rear/ratchet area, and Muzzle face/crown area. Also top strap, bottom and close ups of any blemishes. I also check if roll marks and proof marks are crisp to ensure it has not been refinished.
