What is up with the NRA

The gun grabbers don't even have to try anymore, the NRA is more than happy to continue to press it's own self destruct buttons.

The Bloomberg/Trace media hit in April started all of this. They knew what they were doing

Even though the messenger had an agenda, I can't simply shoot the messenger and dismiss the facts presented, when it has been the NRA's own doings all along. I personally stopped supporting the NRA monetarily years ago due to their antics, the recent hit piece(s) just re-affirmed my decision that their corruption and waste runs deep. They won't be getting a penny from me until and only if they do an entire re-boot of the organization from the top down.

Do we even need them?

At this point that is certainly becoming a good and valid question to ask. I feel currently (aka the last few decades) the NRA does as much harm as good to the community when you add up both columns, they are a bad publicity magnet, and their theatrics at times are obsurb while they have become all too willing to compromise. The NRA is without a doubt the juggernaut of lobbying, but they have been all too willing to compromise so it's certainly debatable how effective that lobbying really is at the end of the day, IMO.

GOA is in a very good position to fill any void if the NRA was to disappear overnight, and I personally believe GOA is more focused, better organized and far less bloated with cronies getting rich off donations.

After seeing how my money was being spent they won’t be getting anymore. Indeed they left us abandoned in Illinois. I think they are just a bunch of fudds.

I will support ISRA just because it is our state gun lobby.

I could care less about what’s happening on the national level. We need to reset our focus here at home. Those of us that aren’t going anywhere that is...

Your sentiment has solid value, but... IMHO it is on the national level that ALL our 2A Rights are in the greatest jeopardy and only a very large and VERY well financed advocacy presence there can protect them. At the moment that IS and has been the NRA. If another 600# gorilla steps up to join the cause? I'll gladly support them too. As I also do for the ISRA.

The National Rifle Association of America is a U.S. nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights. Founded in 1871, the group has informed its members about firearm-related legislation since 1934, and it has directly lobbied for and against firearms legislation since 1975. Wikipedia

That which divides us, weakens our position - IMHO

The problem is that "nonprofit" kind of loses its meaning when there's really no control over salaries.

The average nonprofit executive director makes roughly $60K... but CEO, President, and Executive employees are paid salaries voted on and approved by board members.

There's no reason Pierre should've been making close to $200K base salary in the 90s, or $1M now, with extra bonuses and "special employee retirement plan payments"... over $5M total in 2015.

Towards the last part of '18 I started the easy pay life plan for the NRA. I have decided not to send them another payment and let my membership lapse. I have always wanted to get the life membership but for one reason or another I just never did.

I have always defended the NRA but I am not happy with how things have been going the last few years and the latest snafu about Mr. W. L. and others is the last straw for me. I will no longer be a card carrying member of the NRA till they get their ducks in a row again.

I'm not pleased with the infighting going on at the NRA. With that said, imo, abandoning a national organization in sole support of a state organization is foolish. By all means, support the ISRA, but don't lose sight on the fact that if the 2nd Amendment falls due to lack of protection, then there's no point in having a state organization. The 2nd Amendment is the only thing keeping the fight alive in Illinois. The State has already come out and done everything it can to ensure you don't have a right. Just read the state constitution.

Imho, there should be a profound and coordinated message sent to the NRA that LaPierre that must go. If it means that donations dry up completely, so be it. The guy might have been a very helpful presence in the preceding decades, but the reality is, all of his political capital has been exhausted long ago. Now he's tearing the organization a part with his careless attempts claw his way to maintaining power. Frankly, he arrogantly seems to be very much willing to destroy the entire institution if necessary. The second he put himself ahead of the welfare of the members, proves its already past time to see his arse out the door. Time to get this fool out, PERIOD.

I think we do, and will continue to need them. I think the NRA is claiming a membership of 5 million now, and it has taken them a long time to get those membership numbers to that level.

That works out to over 11,000 NRA members per Congressional district and those members, with proper information and direction, can still have a big effect on public policy and even election outcomes. No other organization comes even close to those numbers. Other organizations are doing great things with important court battles without the NRA lately, but the legislative side of things is vital too.

I would hate to see those numbers plummet now in case we get an anti-2A president or Senate in 2020. And if the pressure continues to mount on Wayne and his cronies, the organization might be able to get some new leadership and right its course before the election, and with a strong membership base we could be in a good position for the 2020 elections.

A 600# gorilla that rolls over and compromises like a puppy when the anti-gunner tickle it isn't what I want representing my at the national level, instead I'll take the 200# GOA, 200# NAGR and 100# SAF that are actually fighting the good fight and not compromising.

Hickok45 is bailing on the NRA too, at least as far as recruiting efforts and official affiliations go.

Hickok45 NRA Announcement

...

We have high hopes that the NRA will come out of all this strong, lean, and more effective; however, we've come to the tough decision that we can no longer take support from the NRA or continue to use our brand to ask people to join.

...

We have not become an enemy of the NRA, as some people are; we're just not going to accept sponsorship in the future or ask viewers to join.

...

TYM speculated that he was losing subscribers due to his NRA affiliation.

Oddly, since Chris Cox was bumped from the picture, I am now getting daily emails from Tim Schmidt trying to get me to join USCCA. Is it just me, or is anybody else getting the same messages?

My suspicious mind thinks it is not a coincidence. I know there is a history of tension between the two groups.

I'm already a member, so no need for them to ask.

My wife and I are both members yet they ask both of us at least once a week for more money.

Only pasted first paragraph or two.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/26/politics/nra-shut-down-production-nratv/index.html

Washington (CNN)The National Rifle Association is shutting down production of its online streaming network, NRATV, according to a spokesman for the gun lobby.

Andrew Arulanandam confirmed to CNN on Wednesday that the organization will stop producing new content for its 24-hour live online channel. The decision was first reported by the New York Times.
The Times noted that NRATV may air past content, but its hosts, like Dana Loesch, will no longer be featured in live programming.
The move to end NRATV's programming comes amid troubles for the powerful lobby group, with reports ofinfighting among its top ranks and scrutiny of its financesby the New York attorney general.
