SYC1304 Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:38 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 01:38 AM Anyone live in cook county Illinois? The ammo tax is ridiculous here and I just now found out that we can buy ammo online but was wondering if the ammo tax still has to be paid for an online order. Anyone here had experience ordering ammo online? I emailed the company but they werent sure if Id be taxed separately or not since the anmo tax didnt show up in the grand total. He said youd probably have to make arrangements to pay that tax locally what does that even mean? Hopefully someone here knows, since Im not looking to pay $250 in taxes ordering online. Thanks,SYC

(you are supposed to pay sales tax to the state when you file your taxes) If ya find the right place there may be no shipping cost tacked on, and they'll ship to Chicago. Target Sports USA has worked for me. Or you could drive to DuPage, Lake, Indiana or Wisconsin. Online sure is easier!

Sweeper13 Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:17 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:17 AM You get hit with 2 taxes ...normal sales tax & then the ammo tax at any store front in Cook county that you buy from..etc Walmart. You go to Walmart out side Cook county , you get taxed JUST the normal sales tax, no extra ammo tax. If you have ammo shipped to your friends, they will have to send a copy of there FOID to the online ammo seller. Then it will get shipped there. Twostarrz Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:28 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:28 AM $$$$ Did criminals start buying stock ammo from Walmart and Dicks sporting goods? Seems the only reason to use this sort of taxing would be to price ammo out of the hands of unsavory people and not to penalize the law abiding citizens. Glad to see such “common sense” legislation being put into place.$$$$

I’ll just travel outside of cook county for the ammo. It’s just crazy the amount of tax they’re charging. $500 tax on 10000 round of ammo? I could fly round trip to Florida for that kind of money. (Only exception would be if the seller has a physical facility in IL.) Then you'd have IL sales tax, no Crook Cty tax, no ammo tax. No reason to ship anything to a friend. Just have it shipped to yourself. TargetSportsUSA does frequently have free shipping. You will need to send online seller a copy of your FOID, and technically, your drivers license as well, but often the sellers don't ask for the DL. Don't make this harder than it is. And definitely don't worry about paying the damn tax later! Yikes. Save yourself a bunch of $$$. I've done this dozens of times, including just tonight! Check out ammoseek.com for all the online sellers and up to the split second prices.
spanishjames Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:48 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 03:48 AM The simplest way to avoid the tax is to buy ammo outside of Cook County. Then you won't have to get in trouble with the Tax Man.

You might want to look into that. Below a certain threshold there is generally no requirement to file a tax return unless you're seeking a refund. That said, a wise gentleman has just pointed out to me that this has now turned into a tax discussion and OP or anyone else looking for these answers should seek the advice of a CPA or tax attorney, as technically the Crook County penalties for non-compliance could be quite draconian. Or contact two attorneys, and get three opinions........sorry, couldn't resist! Or do what Spanishjames said, and drive to another county.

Smoke33 Posted April 8, 2018 at 11:20 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 11:20 AM The left knows that getting rid of guns is a much hard fight. They have discovered it is much easier to make the cost of owning and buying ammo so high that the average person can’t afford to do so. They keep chipping away at the mountain and most don’t notice. As time goes on and you start comparing pictures of that mountain from years ago, you realize that mountain has been turned into a hill. Sorry to confuse you on that sales tax thing. When filing an Illinois Tax Return there is a place to calculate State (not County or Local) Sales Tax you may have avoided by purchasing things tax free out of state by mail order, items on which you paid no sales tax to any state that collects sales tax... I suspect compliance is low. As far as I know, there is no way to reimburse Cook County for sales taxes they didn't collect because you bought something outside of Cook. Many regularly stock up on gasoline and cigarettes when traveling to other places. If the County did not have excessive taxes on these items, people would buy them in Cook. Screw 'em! Buy from wherever you want and don't worry about it.For me the biggest advantage of buying ammo online - the selection is better. Back to guns and ammo and carry now... MadRiverMike Posted April 8, 2018 at 11:46 AM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 11:46 AM I guess I should mention I order from SGammo . Great selection and prices, along with "live" stock numbers shown so you know if they actually have it (so you don't get backordered). They have no problem shipping to me in Crook county, but I live in the suburbs, not the city proper. I don't know if they will ship to you if you have "Chicago" in your address or not. Oh, and all online sellers should ask for a copy of your FOID. I usually just take a picture of it with my camera on my phone and email to them or some sites let you "upload" to your account so you don't have to show it every time. I know I uploaded my FOID on SGammo and it stays there, don't need to resend it.
Illinois Sucks Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:00 PM Share Posted April 8, 2018 at 12:00 PM Ammo is almost always cheaper to buy online vs at a store. I use ammoseek.com to check and compare prices. Keep in mind that instead of sales tax, you will be paying shipping which could be more than sales tax if you are not careful who you buy from. Finding a good price AND free shipping is like winning the lotto. You will need to send an online retailer a copy of your FOID if you have your ammo shipped to Illinois. They will generally only ship to the address on your FOID.

If you went to Texas on vacation and bought souvenirs there and the sales tax is less, you're technically supposed to report that on your IL income tax. But, I don't know anyone who does. GP4L Posted April 9, 2018 at 05:52 PM Share Posted April 9, 2018 at 05:52 PM Another "buy online" remark here. You still need a valid FOID, obviously. I'm almost never home during the times of day that packages typically arrive, and since I usually order a significant dollar amount worth of ammo, I have the order sent to the small FFL business I like using for transfers and whatnot. I give and bring him other business frequently (usually), therefor he's nice enough to not charge me anything to receive ammo for me periodically. If I'm slacking on my part, I always offer to make a cash donation to his business, as it's worth it to me for the convenience. It's also a plus with some online ammo retailers that flat out refuse to ship to Crook - I can usually get them to ship to the FFL I use (who's just outside of Crook). soundguy Posted April 11, 2018 at 04:12 PM Share Posted April 11, 2018 at 04:12 PM One extra note of caution: My supplier changes an extra opt in fee to require an adult signature for delivery. I did not know this and my first order was left at the bottom of my front porch. I guess it was too heavy to carry it up 7 steps and put it by the door. It was not stolen... I am more than happy to pay the extra $4 or so to keep it out of the wrong hands. And I can always pick it up at FedEx in the evening if I need to.
