My Son and I would like to work towards joining 3-gun shoots.  We are in the west suburban area of Chicago and I thought it would be fun to go and spectate at an outdoor 3-gun competition.  For instance - when you members at ASC have a competition, do you have to be a member to attend?  Or can anyone show up and watch?  Anything you can tell me as far as what to watch for, what to bring with, is there usually food or refreshments available?  Anything else you might suggest?

Thanks

Spectators are welcome at ASC and you don’t need to be a member. Bring your common sense safety precautions and you’ll be fine. Eyes and ears are mandatory even for spectators. There really is no food or drink available. Bring a cooler and if it’s summertime, plenty of water. A lot of folks stop at The Pub West afterwards, you will pass it in Waterman if you come from the East.

Spectating is encouraged because you will get hooked. It’s a great advertisement for both the club and 3 gun. Another advantage is you will get to see the new east side ranges that are closed except for matches and training.

A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.

I've only shot at North Porter Conservation Club, and I'm not a member. I just walk up, pay my fee, and shoot. I've had a friend go who just took pictures before he started bringing guns to shoot himself. He still needed eye and ear protection. There was a hotdog vendor that would show up, and there is a Culvers just up the road. I also shot at one with some friends near Sparta. They had a bathroom and club house, but we had to bring our own food and water. None of us were members, we just showed up, paid, and shot. I thought ASC was the same way.

It would be helpful to find a club you want to go to and find their match schedule online. They usually list the contact information for the match director. Just email or call them and they can help out with any questions.

It's also a good idea to let the person leading your group know you're new. You can even ask to be put last on the lineup so you can watch everyone else. Also let people on your squad know and they will be more than happy to give you tips. They are there to have fun, too.

Are you looking at any other competitions or clubs besides 3-Gun at ASC? I'm sure people would be willing to meet up and shoot with you and your son. Mine's one, and I'm really looking forward to taking him someday.

I'll be the first to offer, but if you'd like, myself and a few friends will be shooting a 3 gun match at ASC on 4/21, starting at 7am and you're more than welcome to come out and hang around the squad I'm on.  I'd be more than happy to answer questions in between resetting the stage between shooters, and shooting the stage myself.

They've changed the format this year to morning and afternoon flights and we're on the morning one.  From what I recall, if you're shooting, you have to be there at 7am.  I believe the gates would more than likely be open most of the day, but to be safe getting there around 7am would probably be best to guarantee you get onto the property.

If you PM me, I can send you my cell number, and I'll keep an eye on it that day to check for texts and wave to you so you know where we are.

Sure, there will be a bunch there.

I believe the next one will be on June 9th at ASC.  As long as I can get registered in time, I'll be at that one as well.

Just to add; ASC requires everyone, even spectators to sign a waiver.

I’ve been trying to get my son into 3 gun shooting. We may head out to ASC to check it out (we are members).

Same offer applies, you're more than welcome to hang out with the squad I'm on, and I'm more than happy to answer questions about the why, how, etc.

My wife and I are shooting in the June 9th 3 Gun at ASC in the morning.  Happy to chat with you and answer any questions we can too.

Thanks, I appreciate it! What are their policies about photography at 3-gun events at ASC? I volunteered once to photograph the Zombie Shoot for the ASC, and they agreed as long as I signed over the image rights. No bueno.

I photograph the Kishwaukee Valley Regulators (SASS group) from time to time and never had a problem there.

That I'm unsure of, hopefully someone can better answer that for you.

Personally I don't see an issue with it, but I'm just a club member.

I believe with the Zombie Shoot, the reasoning may have been so that they can use the photos in their promotional marketing for the Zombie Shoot.  I'm just taking a guess at that though.

The worst that can happen is that you show up to take photos, and they tell you no, or ask if you'd be willing to share them so that they can be posted to the FB page after the match.

ASC sent me a "Consent, Waiver and Release of all Claims" form to sign when I offered to shoot the zombie event. I wasn't going to charge and I would naturally share the best edited photos with ASC, but the form stipulated in part that:

1) The rights to all images shall remain the property of the Aurora Sportsmen’s Club, Inc (ASC) and copies of all images taken shall be made available electronically, without further compensation requested or expected, to [email] within 60 days of the event date.

I have been a semi-professional photographer for years and that is completely unacceptable. First, I don't give my copyright to anyone for any reason. I will license images for specific uses, usually quite liberally if it's a charity event or something that I volunteered to photograph. But, I retain my right to benefit from those images in the future. Second, any decent photographer will reserve the right to select only the best images (edited and/or unedited) to the client. I don't want anyone to see my goofs and outtakes.

Anyway, sorry for the off-topic rant.

I will plan on being there as long as my gout doesn't flare up. I will be the short guy with a ball cap and at least one camera. I don't know what most of you look like or your real names so feel free to approach me and introduce yourself.

P.S. Thanks for that image Twostarrz, I think I had seen that or something similar before and those are all reasonable requests to which I would normally adhere anyway.

They're doing 2 flights, morning and afternoon.  I believe the afternoon flight is supposed to start at noon, however at the last match, I don't believe they started until 1 or 1:30pm.

I'll be there in the morning on squad 3.  I'll either be wearing grey or camo shorts, and a black shirt with "Tesla" printed on the front.

Correction. The PPR shoot for today was canceled not the 3gun.

Yeah, I showed up about Noon, walked around and talked to a few guys and just left. What a mess. They should have just cancelled. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

The front ranges with grass all looked pretty good. I think they should have just kept using those until the grass was all grown in the back. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

I’m hoping the ranges dry out a bit by Saturday’s PR shoot.

It was a pretty interesting day.  Muddy as heck, but it's always fun to shoot in adverse conditions.  A lot of the major 3 gun matches wind up being mudfests, so it's good to shoot a local match with those kinds of conditions so that you can tweak your stage plans, and make sure your gear is set up properly.

There were a ton of no shows today lol
