They have counted unhatched eggs.

The county has said it expects to lose $17 million in revenue for each month that imposition of the tax is delayed. The county has said repeatedly that it needs the money now and that the new revenue is already spent. It expects to lay off a total of 2,600 county employees if the tax is not imposed by December.

Typical machine tactics. We can't provide basic services if we don't pass this tax. What a joke.

I am lucky enough to live on the border of Cook/Dupage and actually work in Will county. If this passes I will just buy all my drinks (and more) in a different county. No different than my gasoline. I haven't filled up my car in Cook county for over a decade.

You can see both the hypocrisy and the ignorance of Chicago politicians on display here.

They don't have even a rudimentary understanding of economics. They have no business acumen at all. Their only skill is persuading voters to elect them. But what angers me is they get up in front f voters and promise to bring jobs to the area. The absolute hubris in that statement - like these jackasses think they can snap their fingers and jobs just appear. And despite their talk, they enact policies that destroy jobs.

On the one hand, they tout how important and significant this tax is for funding their government, but they don't recognize the economic importance of soda revenue to business owners. How can beverage revenue be important to Cook County government but not important to businesses at the same time. What a bunch of f-ing ignoramuses !

Businesses are going to see their beverage revenue drop as people make trips to the suburbs to stock up and save money on things like gas, cigarettes and beverages. How is that creating jobs in Chicago? Maybe the stores in the suburbs will have to hire some high-school kid to stock their refrigerated section with beverages, but the stores in Cook County won't have to. The stores in Cook County are going to have empty space in their coolers and the drinks that are in there, are going to sit in there for a long time. No need to hire someone to support declining sales.

This state is doomed.

I thought the tax already took effect on July 1st. Why all the talk about passing it? Did I miss something?

Yes you did. About a week ago after a retail group and several grocers filed a lawsuit, a judge put a temporary hold on Cook County's soda tax.

On a side note One McDonalds franchise owner's stores started charging it, customer made a stink to get his .23 back on principle, store refused, went public, McDs says it is fixed now and get refund with receipt.

If the penny an ounce will bring in $17 million just think what a dime an ounce would bring in! I would also make the tax cover all beverages sold in cook county. Would serve the people of cook county right for electing the tax happy democrats. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

Sorry for the Crook County residents here but I hope they pass a BIG FAT property tax increase perhaps that might wake some people up.

Crook County is lowest of the big 5 in the state, they need around a 25% to catch up with the likes of DuPage and Lake.

They counted unhatched eggs, and are too ignorant to understand that the eggs won't even exist. Like all dems/socialists they are zero-sum thinkers and cannot conceive that people will adapt, so that their taxing scheme will only generate a fraction of what they anticipate. It happens every time.

Or the more cynical mindset is that the leaders know full well that the revenue will not exist, and just use that as another lever to compel yet another component of their social control agenda.
