mab22 Posted August 3, 2020 at 01:48 PM Share Posted August 3, 2020 at 01:48 PM This is kind of scary. https://townhall.com/tipsheet/bethbaumann/2020/07/27/how-one-newspaper-is-working-to-dox-gun-owners-n2573220 The New York State Supreme Court last week granted a motion ordering the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to turn over the name, zip codes and license category of anyone who was granted a firearm license in 2018.The New York Daily News made the request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request process, which provides public information from government agencies to citizens and journalists. Bubbacs Posted August 3, 2020 at 07:33 PM Share Posted August 3, 2020 at 07:33 PM So a request to get the list of those licensed to carry? And not a request to have a list of those who just own a firearm?I’m thinking discrimination at the very least yes? What would be the stated purpose of this request? And what is it being used for?
gunuser17 Posted August 3, 2020 at 10:56 PM Share Posted August 3, 2020 at 10:56 PM This is just a FOIA request for public records. As far as I know, they wouldn't need a reason for the request. Seems to me that it turns on how these records were established by law and whether any protections from FOIA requests were included. Doesn't sound like it. Does seem like the Court's order doesn't directly disclose any personal information other than name and zip code. Probably no different from any other licensee in the state as far as what records must be disclosed any where from hair dressers to lawyers that have to register with the state. mikew Posted August 3, 2020 at 11:18 PM Share Posted August 3, 2020 at 11:18 PM It will read like a who's who.Like a who's who of anti-gun liberals that need on more than you do.Like a who's who of well-to-do that can afford to buy privilege while trying to deny you your rights. mrmagloo Posted August 4, 2020 at 01:34 PM Share Posted August 4, 2020 at 01:34 PM Not that I agree with this at all, but it sure would be interesting to see if Bloomie owns a small arsenal himself. I bet he does.

What would be the stated purpose of this request? And what is it being used for?I think it would be for just about all (see below) handgun owners in NYC "turn over the name, zip codes and license category of anyone who was granted a firearm license in 2018."The categories are unrestricted (carry), premises, and target shooting IIRC. Only the carry license is may-issue It will read like a who's who.Like a who's who of anti-gun liberals that need on more than you do.Like a who's who of well-to-do that can afford to buy privilege while trying to deny you your rights. Not likely: Under the SAFE Act, gun owners have the ability to opt-out of their information being handed over in FOIA requests but their application has to be approved. It's the information of those that did not opt-out that the newspaper wants. The well-to-do and politically connected will certainly have had their opt-out applications approved. Only the peons will have the information released
