Archdiocese of Chicago

Effective September 14,2017, no firearm will be permitted on any church, school, administrative facility, or other facility owned and controlled by the Archdiocese.

I would think most were already GFZs by statute, weren't they?

Not churches. I carry at mine every Sunday, not a Roman Catholic Church though. When I took my FCCL class we had the classroom part at my church. Yeah there were guns in the classroom too.

In the future, when a Catholic church gets shot up because a crazy knows it safe for him to do so, the Archdiocese will then use that incident to call for gun control.

I will also bet my entire 401K that the Archdiocese doesn't know who Mary Shepard is or that she was attacked, brutalized and left for dead while working in her church.

...

For purposes of this Policy, firearm means any device, by whatever name known, which is

designed to expel a projectile or projectiles by the action of an explosion, expansion of gas or

escape of gas, or the build-up and release of tension or pressure. By way of example, this

definition includes, but is not limited to, any pistol, revolver, or other handgun, and any shotgun,

rifle, or other long gun.

...

It's a sad day when the Archbishop is as adept at citing statute as he is at citing scripture.

I'm able to see only a man of this world in his words.

In the spirit of the 500th anniversary of the reformation, nail a letter to your church door and then PM me and I'll show you around my nondenominational church next weekend. The majority of our congregants came from a Catholic background.

If you are set on sticking with your Catholic church, there is one thing that always has and always will get the attention of the church: $

The entirety of this forum doesn't have enough money to change the mind of the Catholic church.

As for churches not being statutory no-carry zones: recall that genesis of the Firearm Concealed Carry Act of 2013 was the result of a lawsuit against the State of Illinois brought by crime victims assaulted inside their church. The old UUW no-carry portion was stricken as unconstitutional as a result of the lawsuit.

It would have been hard for the Legislature to have banned carry in churches given Shepard v. Madigan.

True, but that didn't stop various Democrat legislators from later introducing bills trying to add churches to the list of prohibited locations.

I think even the governor's amendatory veto included churches, and Senate President Cullerton commented in committee that be though churches were already on the list.

Shows how in touch our legislators are with the people, let alone the very bills they've already voted to pass.

I don't recall Jesus ever telling soldiers to not bring their swords with them when talking to him....

How about Peter, the first pope according to the Roman Catholic Church. In the Garden, where the Roman soldiers come for Jesus, Peter draws his sword and cuts off the ear of the High Priests servant. John 18:11 records Jesus as saying to Peter "Put your sword in it's sheath"(King James Version) So the "first pope" carried and Jesus didn't tell him to leave his sword at home.

Response to churches that declare themselves “gun free zones”

Luke 22:36

Jesus said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Luke 22:38

The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.

Nehemiah 4:9

We prayed to our God and posted a guard…”

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

CCC 2263 The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not."

CCC 2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful. . . . Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's.
