Any Ranges that Allow Steel Casing Ammo?

Hey guys new member here, first post!

I mistakenly bought some steel casing ammo yesterday at Walmart. It was a good price and I didnt realize it was steel casing. Anyways ammo is not returnable at Walmart and my local range in McHenry does not allow the use of steel casing ammo. Are there any ranges in the McHenry area or even northern Illinois, just over the border in Wisconsin that allow steel casing ammo?

Article 2 is also ok with steel case ammo. Little bit of a ride from McHenry though.

Since when?

I've had my ammo magnet checked there to ensure it wasnt steel cased/core.

I think it all depends on who is working the counter and what type of mood they are in. And no I'm not joking.

Ive had days there where they wouldnt let me shoot steel cased ammo (the bullets were not bi-metal, just steel cased). And I have had days where they sold me steel cased TulAmmo to use on their range. Ive also had them tell me Im fine shooting my own reloaded ammo there, and then the next time I cant use my own reloads.

Thanks guys! Ill probably check out On Target in Crystal Lake!

Why do some ranges not allow steel ammo anyways? Does it have something to do with possibly causing a spark?

The bi-metal bullets can cause a few sparks when they impact the backstop which certainly *could* be a fire hazard.

Im not sure about why they would ban steel cased ammo, other than the fact that a lot of steel cased ammo has bi-metal bullets. It might just be a simple way to keep bi metal bullets off of their range without having to magnet test any of the steel cased ammo.

Or you can put on your tin foil hat and say its because they only want your brass casings so they can sell them.

In defense of tinfoil hats, they DO religiously collect those brass casings ...

They don't want steel core for sure, but they are smart enough to know the difference between Russian made bi metal jacket and steel core. Or at least they oked it for me. Like Skrapyard said, you can get someone with a bad day or that doesn't even know their own policy. That place is very hit or miss.

Come to think of it now....one time I was there and they had a hand written list on the counter of a couple Russian brands of ammo you couldn't shoot there in the AK.

Its was something like (this is not accurate) Tula is ok, Wolf was not, Golden Tiger and the Bears are fine. Not sure how they arrived at that logic because it's all the same stuff, but that was what they did. Then the next time I went no mention of it was made lol.

Anyways OP, you should call any range first to confirm the details of what we all are saying. Or you can always make a trip out to Buffalo Rock.

They changed their policy about 2 years ago to disallow all steel jacketed ammo. It would be nice if they backed off that policy b/c it means I cannot ever shoot rifle there; I'm not about to pay double for brass-cased ammo for an AK47. I will have to check them out again this winter (when it's too cold to bother with outdoor ranges). If you find out which brands they allow, please add it to this thread. :)
