Craigcelia Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:20 PM Share Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:20 PM I do not think an active leo/county sheriff would get their CCL, and if they did they still would have to go through the training. It doesn't apply to them. Even if a retired LEO did not want to go through the IROCC training, they still would have to take 8 hours of training plus a letter from their agency saying they left in good standing to get the other 8 hours credit. Let's assume he has his Illinois CCL. Yes, he still needs to complete 3 hours (renewal class). No exceptions.
Molly B. Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:47 PM Share Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:47 PM I would assume he will need the three hour course just like everyone else.
THE KING Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:58 PM Share Posted February 22, 2019 at 08:58 PM Yes, retired LEO must take the 3 hour renewal course. Active duty LEO are exempt from taking the 16 hour course for their initial license and the 3 hour renewal. Once they retire they are no longer exempt. This is from the FCCA 430 ILCS 66/75 (h). The exemption includes DOC, FCCL instructors , etc. (h) A person who has qualified to carry a firearm as an active law enforcement or corrections officer, who has successfully completed firearms training as required by his or her law enforcement agency and is authorized by his or her agency to carry a firearm; a person currently certified as a firearms instructor by this Act or by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board; or a person who has completed the required training and has been issued a firearm control card by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation shall be exempt from the requirements of this Section. Former LEO's fall under subsection (j) as stated below. (j) The Department and certified firearms instructors shall recognize up to 8 hours of training already completed toward the 16 hour training requirement under this Section if the training course is approved by the Department and was completed in connection with the applicant's previous employment as a law enforcement or corrections officer. Any remaining hours that the applicant completes must at least cover the classroom subject matter of paragraph (4) of subsection ( of this Section, and the range qualification in subsection © of this Section. A former law enforcement or corrections officer seeking credit under this subsection (j) shall provide evidence that he or she separated from employment in good standing from each law enforcement agency where he or she was employed. An applicant who was discharged from a law enforcement agency for misconduct or disciplinary reasons is not eligible for credit under this subsection (j).
