What happens if you go pass renewal date?

What happens if you go pass the renewal date and apply late? We are looking at around 400 bucks for training and renewal and don't have it right now. Thinking about doing mine now and maybe the wifes a little later but I am worried if she goes by the date they will make her start all over again. What is the procedure if you don't renew by expiration date?

and posted image of renewal letter by ISP indicates that if CCL expires before you submit renewal application you start over again from beginning with new application and full 16 hr training.

..."Also be mindful that if you submit your renewal application prior to expiration, your card will remain in an ACTIVE status while processing your application. If you allow your card to expire, and you wish to apply for a new CCL, a 16-hour training certificate will be required."...

If the training expires, why accept an NRA basic pistol or DD214 to waive 8 hours from an applicant whoâs training may have been 60 years ago, but not accept the full course that was 5 years ago?

Here’s why. Following your logic, it would make more sense to let you CCL expire and resubmit your old original certificate. You wouldn’t have to pay for ANY additional training or sit through a renewal class. Only fee would be the $150 for the license, which is what renewal people pay. But renewal people also have to sit through 3 hours of training/requal and pay for it.

The statute is the statute. If this was not the intent of the legislature then it is a loophole and can be exploited until such time the legislature changes it.

The only downside is you have a minimum 90 - 120 days without a valid license.

You expect the ILLINOIS legislation to be clear and make sense?

  • 1 month later...

I applied and submitted all of the required documentation for renewal of my CCL a couple months out from it's expiration date. Well, the expiration date has just passed while my renewal application was and is under review. Now that my current card has expired without a renewal "approval" I guess I am no longer legal until such time that I am approved or denied?

No, as long as you renew before the expiration date, your CCL remains valid.

Correct. It’s written right in law.

You should request a refund from your instructor. They obviously didn't do a very good job teaching the law portion.

Here's the law:

(430 ILCS 66/70)

Sec. 70. Violations.

© A license is invalid upon expiration of the license, unless the licensee has submitted an application to renew the license, and the applicant is otherwise eligible to possess a license under this Act.
