There Is No Evidence of an 'Epidemic of Mass Shootings'

Originally from Ammoland, Don't Destroy First Amendment to Stop Mass Public Killings,

which referenced Reason, There Is No Evidence of an 'Epidemic of Mass Shootings',

which has a ~45 minute podcast with Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox.

This is not a transcript, but some of the points made, in no particular order.

According to records of events, in 2000, 9% of active shooters didn't kill anyone. Currently, 50% of active shooters don't kill anyone.

Either the marksmanship of active shooters has declined significantly or records of active shooters in past years leave out ones that were unsuccessful.

Adam Lanza, the perpetrator of the "Sandy Hook massacre," not only played violent video games, he played a lot (A LOT) of Dance Dance Revolution.

Was it Dance Dance Revolution that threw him over the edge? Or is it wrong to try to infer someone's future actions by what type of popular video games they play?

If anything, the fact that he was a burgeoning violent criminal probably inclined him to play violent video games, not the other way around.

The 1990s saw more frequent mass murders than now, but, in the wake of 9/11, mass murders didn't get as much media coverage, because it was all about 9/11.

It's not the coverage of the perpetrators, per se, by the media that inspires copycat events, but the glorification of the perpetrators by the media.

This is the point that provides the Ammoland article's title.

The media should not muzzle identification of killers (like New Zealand, for example), but glorifying the killers in intricate detail should stop.

What has changed is that there are more fake shootings done by the CIA to sway public opinion against gun ownership. Just spend a couple hours researching Sandy Hook. It was a drill. Nobody died and there is no crime scene video or Police dash cam video of 600 children leaving the building. No trauma helicopters were even called. Nobody was allowed in to the building not the paramedics or the parents. Wayne carver, the medical examiner, stated that " All the parents identified their dead kids through photographs. He has great photographers" Are you kidding me? It all BS

Uhh, police didn't start using body cameras widely until 2014.

Sandy Hook happened in 2012.

Sandy Hook is in CT, and CT outlaws the use of dash cameras by police.

So.... how do you think that no dash cam or body cam video would be a "conspiracy"?

I literally looked for 2 minutes and debunked that argument. If that part is clearly not valid, I'm not going to bother with the rest.

Critical thinking skills are very important. Please use them, and the conspiracy theories only help Antis... remember that.

Who put up the traffic sign "EVERYBODY MUST CHECK IN" on the day of the event? You are wrong about the dash cam videos. They were subpoenad from the Connecticut Police and showed no children. Furthermore there were no school lunches being delivered to the the Sandy Hook school at the time of the event. Sycso foods was not delivering the school lunches there because the school was not even open. This event was orchestrated by Eric Holder as a way to start "brainwashing Americans in to giving up their guns". You are either a government agent or you did not research the facts regarding this active shooter drill.

CHO, please stop with that nonsense. I have a good friend (I’ve know her over 35 years) and her son was a 2nd grader at Sandy Hook and in the school when the shooting happened. He saw it happen, his friends were murdered there. Spouting conspiracy theories like yours doesn’t do anyone any favors, especially those of us that stand opposed to the left’s continued efforts to restrict our Constitutionally protected civil rights.

CHO, yes, please stop. You wanna look at the crackpot web sites that agree with you, that's fine, but don't quote them as factual when there is incontrovertible evidence to the contrary from folks who have nothing to gain by telling the truth. Just ask Alex Jones who espoused the same theory, and now blames "psychosis" after being sued by the families.

This is as easy as simple stat manipulation. Don't have the data to back your claim?...simple, just slide the definition of what is a "mass shooting" and BLAM! The numbers jump massively and you can claim there is now an epidemic of it.

The current "me-too" people have done this...just alter the definition of what rape is and all of the sudden, you can make it seem like rape has taken off like a rocket.

Even if “mass shootings” are rare, and constitute a tiny fraction of the total murders, they terrify the public because of the seeming randomness of the victims. The suburban Mom that reads about inner city gang murders might be unhappy but doesn’t worry that it will affect her children. But a mass shooting at at a school or mall or theatre, or whatever, terrifies her, thinking that it could be her kids or herself next time.
