Democracies vs. Republics

This was a good video. The only problem I had with it is that the political spectrum is not a horizontal line, there is another demension to it. There is a social and fiscal scale (horizontal and vertical lines if you will).

That is how you get the four major political philosiphies. Conservative, Libertarian, Statist, and Liberal. The forms of government in the video was very accurate however. Democracies never last.

The Major Political Philosiphies

If I had to guess, the majority of the people on this board would be Libertarian or Conservative. Dont think there are many Liberals or Statists here.

Conserative: governement invlovement in social matters but not in fiscal matters. Conservatives like a small government, but one that maintains social order, free and open markets and individualism (personal ownership).

Liberal: government involvement in fiscal issues, but not social matters. Liberals like a large government but advocate social freedom. They favor protectionism and equality (collectivism). Most socialists are liberals.

Statist: governement involvement in social and fiscal issues. Statists like a large government and advocate social order over social freedom. They also favor protectionism and collectivism over individuality and personal ownership. Popular forms of statism are populism or totalitarianism/authortarianism.

Libertarian: no/limited government involvement in social and fiscal issues. Libertarians prefer a small government and advocate social freedom. They favor open and free markets along with individualism and personal ownership. Classical Liberalsim and Anarchy are popular forms of libertarianism.

Students USED to learn this in elementary school...

I had three excellent history teachers in elementary and high school who fueled my interest in Colonial America and the Revolutionary War.

They had a way of making that period come alive - good teachers they were. One was supposed to even be a descendant of George Mason. (He may have been pulling my leg) I still love reading about those early years in American history.

Hey Coach!

If you would, it might not be a bad idea to post your book list for consumption by the younger set. The last two to three decades of students have been force fed revisionist history, and really need to come up to speed. Any time I've posted on historical topics they've been very well received.

Thank you sir!!!
