Or how about that dumb debate that the 2nd ammendment only applies to revolutionary war era weapons? And that we'd be safer with muskets. Wilmette had a handgun ban back then, didn't stop a paroled murderer from making a handgun from a musket.

Actually, he made a musket out of a replica musket to kill his wife and stepson, then turned that musket into a pistol to take his own life.

So Vegas wasn't a mass shooting, it was a murder suicide? I realize it's semantics, but Congress defined mass killings as 3 or more killings in a single incident (P.L. 112-265). FWIW, which is not much coming from congress.

Although the term "mass killing" is defined in the law you cite, a definition of "mass shooting' does not follow from that. "Mass shooting" is a term defined by the person using it.

So the answer to whether or not it was a mass shooting is yes, if you that's what you want to call it and no, if another description makes more sense to you.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just drive to Indiana and buy a handgun?

The anti-gunners that think the Australia gun ban laws are the solution to violence will not be deterred in the least by this mass shooting. They will rationalize that it was just a domestic violence issue as opposed to the random killings like Newtown, Las Vegas, Parkland, etc. The underlying problem is that some people are delusional in their thinking, in effect saying that criminals are "forced" to follow the law so that if guns are outlawed there will be no guns to hurt (or help) anyone. And as to the help, they just choose to ignore the reality of the use of guns for self defense as well as the fact that a gun can provide help to a person that is physically unable to stop an attacker. So I don't expect even a single gun critic to suddenly say "if it could happen in Australia despite their draconian gun restrictions, I guess gun restrictions really don't work except to keep law abiding people disarmed and defenseless". It would be nice if they did, but they won't say anything like this.
