Roskam Gets Gun Vote Right, Hultgren Doesn’t

It’s not often when Republican Rep. Peter Roskam joins with all the Democrats in the Illinois Congressional delegation and none of his GOP counterparts on a vote.

And with it being gun legislation — one strongly supported by the NRA — it’s even more of an outlier.

But last week, Roskam, of Wheaton, did just that. And he got it right.

Unfortunately, the other suburban GOP congressman in our circulation area, Randy Hultgren of Plano, got it wrong.

The bill in question, which passed the House, is the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which makes it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines, even if one state has more stringent requirements.

That’s the case in Illinois, which begrudgingly became the last state in the nation to allow concealed carry. In doing so, it requires much more of gun owners — hours of training, background checks and a minimum age of 21 — before they get their permit, than say gun owners in Missouri, which requires no permit and no background check. Nineteen states have no required gun safety training.

It’s clear that Illinois is a loser under this bill and Roskam recognized that.

“While a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I opposed this legislation because it would allow out-of-state individuals with no license, no permit and no training to carry a concealed weapon in Illinois,” Roskam said in a statement. “(It) would force Illinois to permit visitors from states with incredibly lax or nonexistent concealed carry licensing requirements to legally carry in our communities.”

Given that this bill usurps states’ rights, it’s a mystery that anyone in Illinois would favor it. But that’s how strong the gun lobby is. It’s refreshing to see Roskam buck that pressure for the good of his district and state.

Perhaps he was listening to one of his constituents, Holly Blastic of Naperville, who wrote a letter to the editor as a member of the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

“Residents deserve and need to feel safe,” Blastic wrote. “Allowing untrained teens, and even violent criminals to carry loaded guns in our public spaces will further endanger our community.”

The bill now goes to the Senate where we expect our senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, to lead the charge to defeat this legislation. Especially in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, a gun bill that endangers public safety is the wrong approach when deciding which gun laws should be passed.

Yeah, because not passing CC reciprocity will certainly, for sure prevent untrained teens and violent criminals from carrying loaded guns in public. Gotta love how they spin the words and build these lies to tug at emotional strings.

Congressman Roskam is certainly wrong on this.

Consider, also, the anti-2A stance of his opponent in the general election, Sean Casten.

“I’ll support bringing back the Assault Weapons Ban.

I will advocate for laws that allow the ATF to store gun records in searchable, electronic records to bring law enforcement into the 20th (much less 21st) century.

I’ll support the Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Act, banning access to lethal weapons for offenders who have been convicted of domestic violence or who are under a restraining order (H.R. 2670).

I’ll support a national ban on high-capacity magazines.

I’ll support laws to close the gun show loophole.

I’ll support “no fly no buy” rules to prohibit gun sales to suspected terrorists on the federal no-fly list.

I’ll support repeal of the “Dickey Amendment,” which forbids the Center for Disease Control from studying gun violence in the United States”.

Sean Casten is also a strong proponent of other left-wing issues.

That's the problem in a lot of races. Rep. Roskam has shown himself to be a RINO and supporting some anti-gun measures. However, his opponent is virulently anti-gun and would work to pass all anti-gun measures. Casten will proudly smile as he makes us all felons for daring to own standard magazines in pistols or rifles.

So as mad as I am at Roskam (and I've already emailed him and called him, and will be getting my family to do the same), I will be voting for him as the far lesser of 2 evils in November. If I can't "hold my nose and vote for him", then I would be helping Casten in his goal to disarm us all...

Obviously, this is just like voting for Kirk. You do it so to maintain the majority in the house and hope the balance of the majority squashes stupidity.

Yes. It's rough to be in this district... I'm throwing away both my Winger and my Roskam signs. I will no longer actively campaign for either of them, although I will hold my nose and still vote for both of them in November. I lived my entire life (both childhood & adult life) in DuPage County; it's nothing like it used to be, with all the Democraps moving in from Cook and bringing their trash (& authoritarian anti-freedom attitude) with them...

And crime.

I'm just two minutes out of Kane county. Sometimes I wonder if I should have settled there. And extra 10 minutes of commute would have saved me 3k annually in taxes and gotten me into a better political district, but St.Charles seems to have more crime than WC based on reading the paper. I do love where I live right now...but I cringe when neighbors put a house up on the market. Never know what you will get.

Maybe you would be better off NOT holding your nose and finding (and voting for) an alternative. :logik:

Are you crazy? The alternative is a Left-wing Democrat who is campaigning on a pure anti-gun platform. A vote for anyone other than the Republican candidate in a General Election is handing the election to the left-winger who wants to take all our rights away! The entire Chicagoland area is too liberal. A true conservative doesn't stand a chance anymore it seems. But I will certainly always vote for the moderate who's right some of the time vs. throwing my vote away to let the leftist in...

It's kinda like what Trump reportedly said, "could shoot someone on 5th Ave" and still get the base to vote for him. I like to think I have a pretty solid moral compass, but politics is politics and there's so much at stake in losing the majority. If there was a better candidate in the primary, sure I'd try for change.

I attended a debate between Roskam and Duckworth a while back. When the topic of 2nd Amendment came up, she was clearly against it and he was a clearly a pro-gun supporter. Hard to believe his views on the 2A have changed.

Many times when a politician knows a bill is going to pass, they will vote against it to take away ammo from their opposition at home. They may also vote against it as a gesture to placate a base that they don't really support (fake opposition). Likewise when they know a bill is going to fail, they vote for it knowing it won't make a difference in the outcome. Not saying that this is what Roskam did in this case, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that his NO vote wouldn't have been made it he was the tie breaking vote.
