CCIL77 Posted July 19, 2017 at 05:21 AM Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 05:21 AM Hi, wondering what the cheapest (or average) FFL fee is on the North side of Chicago (or in that general region). I'm thinking of ordering online and the one closest to me charges $30. Is that the norm or could someone else do it cheaper? Between the cost of the gun and the high shipping, every bit helps. Thanks!
mic6010 Posted July 19, 2017 at 06:20 AM Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 06:20 AM $30 is a pretty standard price for a transfer fee imo. Places with overhead would rather you bought the guns from them instead of online. The least amount I have heard of someone paying for a transfer fee is $20. That was a home based FFL though, not a shop or anything. If you haven't already found the cheapest place online to buy here's a good site for that. https://gunwatcher.com/
InterestedBystander Posted July 19, 2017 at 01:41 PM Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 01:41 PM I would say $20-$30 is reasonable. I think the highest Ive seen was $75. I dont know any in the area you mentioned. Theres a thread with a list of IllinoisCarry FFLs, some who were giving discounts to members iirc. http://illinoiscarry.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41595
Hazborgufen Posted July 19, 2017 at 02:22 PM Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 02:22 PM My guy charges $25 for the transfer and $5 for the call to FTIP. If you transfer multiple guns it's $25 per and one $5 charge. He also starts the waiting period clock from the moment you purchase your gun. Just forward your confirmation email to him and the timestamp on it starts the clock. https://www.dmzsg.com/
Patriots & Tyrants Posted July 19, 2017 at 07:19 PM Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 07:19 PM $30.00 is normal. Find a guy with good hours and communication it will pay off in spades.
CCIL77 Posted July 19, 2017 at 07:47 PM Author Share Posted July 19, 2017 at 07:47 PM Thanks all for the great info. First time going the online/FFL route so I wasn't sure. Good info in the FFL thread, too, but most of them don't list prices. And most are in the boonies - though they'd probably say the same about me! 😁

Xwing Posted July 20, 2017 at 01:37 PM Share Posted July 20, 2017 at 01:37 PM RSM Firearms in Belvidere is $20 to transfer That is a pretty good price. I'll have to add it to "possible future contact" list. The cheapest transfer I've found is $15, about 3 years ago. I used to be able to find $15 transfers regularly, but really had to search for it last time.

obfd13 Posted July 20, 2017 at 09:25 PM Share Posted July 20, 2017 at 09:25 PM You might also want to check if the FFL starts the waiting clock when you make the purchase or when you fill out the paperwork. Not having to make a second trip to the FFL could be worth a few bucks of your time.
DD123 Posted July 21, 2017 at 03:43 PM Share Posted July 21, 2017 at 03:43 PM $20-30 is average. The gun shops routinely charge anywhere from $50 and I've seen as high as $100. They really bend people over the table. A friend of mine paid $75 twice until I told him to stop doing that lol. Find a good FFL that is close to you, and works out of their home, and that someone recommends. The FFL I use is a member here, but he's nowhere near the area you're looking. He's actually not even close to where I live, but he's a nice guy, communicates well, and is very reasonable on transfers.
