Snowbird renewals

I searched and found one topic that talked about a snowbird question.

http://illinoiscarry.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=70361

Since it was not in the title, I hope I can post questions on the specific issue and get the latest info.

My CCL expires in early April 2020. I would still be in Arizona. There are no IL instructors there, according the the ISP list.

I'm not up for renewal yet, as of today.

1) when does the renewal period open up?

2) Can I get my 3 hour training now, before the renewal period?

3) If as was stated in the other thread, the post office won't forward license mailings, does anyone know if will they hold it for me? Or do they return it to ISP?

4) Any recent info on whether or not an expired CCL would require a complete new process, or something like a renewal?

Maybe this is the easy solution for me:

5) I'm wondering if I can apply for my renewal a couple of weeks before the expiration date, and because of normal slow processing, it won't be mailed until summer anyway?

Thanks for any info.

Renewals open up 120 days before expiration.

You can take the renewal class before that, well before that.

I would do your #5 bullet point. Your CCL remains valid past your expiration date if you've renewed before it expired.

1) when does the renewal period open up? 90 or 120 days prior to expiration

2) Can I get my 3 hour training now, before the renewal period? Yes

3) If as was stated in the other thread, the post office won't forward license mailings, does anyone know if will they hold it for me? Or do they return it to ISP? Not sure

4) Any recent info on whether or not an expired CCL would require a complete new process, or something like a renewal? You have to go through the process again if expired. Don't let it expire.

Maybe this is the easy solution for me:

5) I'm wondering if I can apply for my renewal a couple of weeks before the expiration date, and because of normal slow processing, it won't be mailed until summer anyway? Taking a risk....

1) when does the renewal period open up? 90-120 days prior to expiration

2) Can I get my 3 hour training now, before the renewal period? Yes!

3) If as was stated in the other thread, the post office won't forward license mailings, does anyone know if will they hold it for me? Or do they return it to ISP? You can add a mailing address when doing the application or call ISP and request it be mailed to your vacation address.

4) Any recent info on whether or not an expired CCL would require a complete new process, or something like a renewal? Expired CCL requires full 16 hr training certificate.

Maybe this is the easy solution for me:

5) I'm wondering if I can apply for my renewal a couple of weeks before the expiration date, and because of normal slow processing, it won't be mailed until summer anyway? Very true

Thanks for any info.

IIRC, renew button goes active at 120 days but have seen reports from 90 to 120. you may or may not receive an email or letter.

Yes, you can get your 3 hr training and certificate now then submit with renewal. Does not have expiration date.

If your mail is being held, the USPS will hold the letters, but I believe there is a limit to the number of days mail will be held.

An expired CCL requires a complete new training/cert for 16 hrs. Submit your renewal before current expiration and card stays active while renewal is being processed.

Renewals right now are taking longer than original apps in many cases. Those without prints are often taking 110+ days.

IANAL

Just for your information. When I was living in Illinois and snow birding in Arizona, my first Illinois CCW was approved and mailed to my home. The Post office did not forward the envelope to me and it was returned to Springfield. The CCW people then sent me an email telling me that they could not mail to my address out side of Illinois. I responded to the email and I believe that there was a number that I phoned to Springfield and discussed the situation with them. They agreed to sit on the envelope until I returned from AZ. Upon my return to Illinois, I emailed the CCW people and and informed them that I was now home. They then re mailed the permit to my home.

  • 2 months later...

I just got a reminder letter from the ISP that my CCL will expire this spring. That was unexpected, I had read that they didn't remind holders.

Some here have reported that they got reminders in the mail. Others have stated that they have not received them.

Taking the class before you leave and then applying a week ahead of time should be the safest. If you have applied successfully before the expiration date,

your old license remains valid until you receive the new one.
