ICD-10 Medical Billing Codes

RECarry

Recommended Posts

Medical billing systems changed this week from using 14,000 billing codes to approximately 68,000.

Does anyone know if codes were added that will break out more reasons for firearm-related injuries?

Just wondering if the Feds will use the expansion of codes to collect more data for anti-2A campaigns.

Waterfowl hunters...ICD-10's got you covered.

It is 224 days before the move to ICD-10 becomes a must-do. Lest the deadline slip your mind, MedPage Today is spotlighting some of those thousands of new codes that might just be getting a bit too granular.

Today’s code:

W61.92: Struck by other birds (There are already separate diagnostic codes for being struck by parrots, macaws, psittacines, chickens, geese, and ducks. W61.92 is for all other types of birds.)

So how do they code it if you choose not to disclose the cause of the injury?

Focus on the present, not dwell on the past.

Coders code based on what's in the chart. The doctor is going to put whatever they think as they're treating you and when that that hits the coder, they have to make sense of it all and assign the appropriate codes and modifiers.

They're using the new codes for a few reasons; insurance reimbursement, population health, general statistics, and other reasons.

I've heard many paranoid theories about ICD-10, and once people understand that we've been on ICD-9 for over thirty years, it begins to make sense. Population health statistics are important because they help researchers understand what's going on in certain areas. If you have a 50 mile area where a bunch of people continue to get a rare disease, it gives researchers a map on where to begin investigating.
