Tango7 Posted January 15, 2018 at 12:51 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 12:51 PM I attended a class down at the College of DuPage's Suburban Law Enforcement Academy a few months ago. Very nice place, but a little flyer caught my eye - offering their new state-of-the-art range for CCW classes. While perusing College of Lake County's program offerings, I noticed a similar class, but this one included the following disclaimer, that appears to have erroneous information. While I love the idea of training being offered in as many places as possible, I find it wryly amusing that the college crowd (including a formerly pro-CCW Democratic gubernatorial candidate) spoke so passionately about keeping guns off campus, but it's completely OK for them to charge at least $300 to train the people they seem to despise. lockman Posted January 15, 2018 at 06:46 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 06:46 PM Transport your gun to the range, that is legal. State law provides an exemption for classes at schools.
TRJ Posted January 15, 2018 at 08:19 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 08:19 PM So how do they teach care, cleaning and unloading of your firearm if you can't bring your firearm? Who's signing off on the certificate that the student knows how to do this without witnessing the student doing this?

Quiet Observer Posted January 15, 2018 at 09:41 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 09:41 PM Included in prohibited areas in FCCA “(15) Any building, classroom, laboratory, medical clinic, hospital, artistic venue, athletic venue, entertainment venue, officially recognized university-related organization property, whether owned or leased, and any real property, including parking areas, sidewalks, and common areas under the control of a public or private community college, college, or university”. While they failed to mention the parking lot exemption, it looks like they correctly paraphrased the law. That might apply if the student had a CCL. But since they are there to take the CCL class, that seems unlikely. Many CCW training classes restrict or limit bringing a firearm to certain areas. Here are a few that I found with a quick search. Midland Academy, Orland Park “Do not bring firearms or ammo into the class, please secure them in your vehicle until you are asked to bring it into the class and then only unloaded firearms are allowed”. Illinois Concealed Carrry, Oak Brook “Q: I have registered for a class. Do I need to bring any firearms? A: NO. They are not allowed in the classroom setting. The Utah CCW Permit requires no live firing, but the Florida permit does. Illinois Concealed Carry will provide the firearms for all classes. There will be an extra small fee for ammunition”. Champaign CCW, Champaign “Please leave your firearm/ammo in your car during classroom hours (If you want to bring it inside, tell the instructor and he'll tell you where to secure it.)”
mauserme Posted January 15, 2018 at 10:55 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 10:55 PM I'm thinking that the FCCA wouldn't apply here since the students are taking the class in order to become licensed. As lockman stated, there is an exemption in UUW for: ...students carrying or possessing firearms for use in training courses, parades, hunting, target shooting on school ranges, or otherwise with the consent of school authorities and which firearms are transported unloaded enclosed in a suitable case, box, or transportation package. COD seems not to like that exemption very much.
Quiet Observer Posted January 15, 2018 at 11:34 PM Share Posted January 15, 2018 at 11:34 PM The exemption exists "with the consent of school authorities". These school authorities have not given their consent. Thus the exemption does not apply in this case.
tkroenlein Posted January 16, 2018 at 12:36 AM Share Posted January 16, 2018 at 12:36 AM It's also a lie. Students are not prohibited by LAW to bring guns on campus. They are prohibited by school policy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

milq Posted January 22, 2018 at 12:30 AM Share Posted January 22, 2018 at 12:30 AM We (at my college) have them bring their firearms in on the first day, inspect them to be sure they appear to be serviceable, teach them cleaning procedures on their own firearms, etc. We started the visual inspection after one guy showed up with a very old DA revolver that hadn’t been cleaned since.....? It wouldn’t function properly (gummed up badly) and he was loaned a firearm for the live fire portion. We do restrict them from bringing in any ammo for safety reasons of course.
