Wrote to Mayor Lightfoot today

I never expect my emails to elected officials to do much good, and I have had better luck with getting my thoughts published as letters to the editor in the Chicago Tribune, but I thought I would write her again. Her contact form on the Office of the Mayor's website asks for an email address and name but not for a street address so the office will not know that I am not a city resident. I expressed my disgust at her recent comment about her telling business and homeowners not to use firearms to defend themselves or their businesses from the rioters and looters but to just call 911. I told her she really must think that the residents of Chicago are total morons to believe her idiotic advice which will accomplish absolutely nothing in terms of actual protection. I said that maybe if she gave up her entire security detail I would give her ignorant remarks a bit of credibility, at least for sincerity and honesty. But of course, I told her, that she clearly does not believe that she is to be governed by the same rules and laws that apply to the residents of Chicago since she is so much more important than the mere peasants who pay her salary. I wished her well for her next haircut even if no one else can yet go to a salon or barber shop. I'll post again if I hear anything more than a form letter response.

I know that most legislators and other elected officials never see the emails, letters or hear about the phone calls made to them unless it is from someone famous, powerful and possibly a donor. But I know that tabulations are kept on every issue that they are contacted about. If enough people express a concern there is at least a possibility that the staff goes to the elected official and says that a number of your constituents are unhappy about this or that and you might need to say or do something. In a job that I had several years ago I had reason to meet more than once with our Congressman and we had an extensive conversation about this very subject. He represented about 550,000 constituents and said that if received as few as ten contacts on a subject it was worthwhile for his staff to brief him on the issue and assign a staff member to look into both sides of the matter and to advise him. So while Lightfoot might not care about what gun owners think or want, if enough of us contact her office she might just think about softening her stupid stance on this subject.

Despite the fact that gun owners are probably among the strongest supporters of the police, especially in this crazy climate of "defund the police", I have little doubt that under the control of the Democrat leadership of Chicago, the typical gun owner will still be treated poorly relative to the riot prone BLM protester or other miscreant on the street, especially if black, but I doubt any of that would keep most of us from using our firearms defensively if needed rather than just calling 911 while we are assaulted, murdered and robbed.

Long ago, Senate President Emil Jones spoke to a group of us. He said most politicians subscribe to the cockroach theory. If you don't see any cockroaches (i.e. don't hear any constituent feedback), you assume all is good. If you see a few (hear from a few), you start to worry just a little. If you see several (hear from several), you dig into it more. Made sense to me then and makes sense to me now.
