Florida CCL Application

My experience today with applying for a Florida CCL.

I am in Florida for some work meetings this week. I wanted to apply because I do spend a lot of time here and my Illinois CCL does not allow me to carry here. I would have applied by mail, but the stumbling block was getting actual paper and ink fingerprints. No one around me does it. I found one police station about 30 miles away from my house, but they would do it only for residents of their community.

How did the process go? Super smooth!

I went to Florida website and saw what I needed and how to make an appointment, which I did.

This morning I arrived 40 minutes early, walked in and there was a large line. I thought I was going to be spending a long time with this process. After about 5 minutes the line cleared, I stated I was there for a 10:30 appointment, they took my Ill DL and my training certificate as well as DD214 and asked be to be seated until my name was called. I thought I would be sitting for about 35-45 minutes. But not even 5 minutes later I was called up.

There were lots of PCs where the applicant sat and filled in the information. Two people were monitoring us and then helped us through the payment process, scanned our documents and then shipped us over to the fingerprint station. That took another 5 minutes and then to the picture station.

And that is it!

I was given a reference number and told I would have my CCL within 30 days because of veterans status. I was out the door before my scheduled appointment of 10:30! The staff was very polite, efficient and GREAT!

My $.02, screw the getting the fingerprint cards, just go to Florida and do it there, have a vacation too!!!

Glad to hear about another great CCL experience! Of course, it raises the question of "why not here?"

Process discussed here by others applying for Florida.

Any chance you have a more detailed version for non-residents CCL for Florida. My dad just bought a condo there, so i could use his address to file for a resident(maybe). But I'm trying to find the specific details on applying as a non-resident (currently living in Chicago)and I'm out of vacation days to take a trip down to Florida. Their ccw website is all over the place, and I'm not finding anything solid on non-resident applying. Warning: I'm not tech savvy, but I'm learning. Slowly but surly making progress. One thread I read said they went to Niles Police Dept to get printed for only about $25, but then it said on Florida site you need to request finger cards from them. The whole thing seems contradictory, but it's most likely user error on my part due to lack of tech skills. I would appreciate any help in this if possible. I also read they need proof of training cert., which I have two... one for the IL CC Firearm 16 hour training, and another one from the same class but it's a USCCA certificate stating I completed training. Not sure which one is supposed to be sent and need some guidance.

I have browsed the threads on here looking for some definitive answers, but nothing seems to be concrete, and some comments/ threads are contradictory. Floridas website is extremely hard to navigate for me, even after several read throughs and double checking.

Greatly appreciate any help or advice that can be offered. Just to reiterate, my father has a condo down there, so I could use his address as a resident permit?(as long as I don't have to travel to apply in person), but I think you have to apply in person, in which case I would rather not take the trip and do it via mail, if its possible to register as a resident via mail and have the card sent to Chicago. If not I am more than happy to go the non-resident route.

Thanks for the read and the patience. I've been working hard to enhance my computer skills, so I ask you bare with my technology illiteracy for the time being.

IF you were able to do this, you would not be able to carry in Illinois, where you actually live, because you are now claiming to be a resident of Florida and your IL license will no longer be valid.

-Download and print the application. Make a couple copies so you can mess one up and make the one you mail look nice.

-Download and print the instructions

-Call the FL office and request Fingerprint Cards, the number is on the application

-Follow the instructions and fill out the application

-Have the Niles PD Officer "print" you on BOTH cards... So you have an extra one just in case

-Ask us questions if you still have any

Thank you sound guy! Especially grateful for the filing as a resident warning. Much appreciated.
