Armed standoff at Los Angeles Trader Joe's ends with 1 employee dead, wounded suspect in custody

(CNN)A Trader Joe's employee is dead and a wounded suspect is in custody after a standoff in Los Angeles stretched over several tense hours Saturday before the gunman's surrender.

About 40 people were inside the grocery store on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood when an armed man ran in, according to police. He had crashed a car he was driving nearby after firing multiple rounds at officers pursuing him, police said.
The man was fleeing police after a shooting in which an elderly woman and a young woman were victims, Los Angeles police Officer Mike Lopez told CNN. Their conditions were not given.
Police said the older woman was the suspect's grandmother, and he was driving her car when he wrecked it near the Trader Joe's.
Customers ran out of the store when the armed man burst in and police surrounded the building. During the three-hour standoff, several people walked out of the store with their hands up. Some employees climbed out a back window on a chain ladder.

An Update to Our Customers Regarding Guns in Our StoresFebruary 08, 2016

... Our approach has always been to follow local laws; and while that will not change, we want to make clear we do not welcome weapons of any kind in our stores. We respectfully request that customers not bring firearms into our stores.

Thank you.

Unless they post a compliant sign, I'm gonna keep on keepin' on. Aldi says they don't allow firearms either but I've never seen one posted and Aldi can be pretty sketchy.

Aldi had a CCL incident in Milwaukee. We were shown this in class: https://www.reddit.com/r/wisconsin/comments/274a2w/security_video_2012_robbery_at_milwaukee_aldi/

Yeah and typical reddit, the comments in that post are a dumpster fire if there ever was one.

There is a woman, on another forum that I lurk on. She was one of the hostages. Seventy years old, retired. She was just checking out, and had already paid for her groceries, when the gunman entered. She had her house and car keys on a lanyard on her neck. The gunman order her to take them off, and leave them at the checkout station. At some point she was laying on the floor, and trying to text out with her phone. The gunman said anyone caught using a phone will be shot. At the end, there were 7 or 8 hostages, sitting in a circle. The gunman was physically and mentally stressed from a gunshot wound in the arm. He was shivering/shaking. At some point she was allowed to leave because of her age. She didn't explain that in detail. When she walked out the door, she was taken to an LAPD armored vehicle, interviewed, and examined by EMT's. The LAPD drove her home at 11 pm. She had to leave her keys and car because it was still a crime scene.

The truth is criminals are criminals and unless you are willing for forcibly prevent them from bringing a gun into your store, there's nothing you can do. You can, however, stop law-abiding licensed concealed carriers from carrying by putting up a legally-binding sign. BRILLIANT!

I'm actually totally fine with "statements" by Starbucks or Trader Joe's "asking" customers not to bring guns into their businesses. It's far better than putting up a sign. I can choose to ignore the statement. I keep my weapon out of sight and no one knows I have it. No one is the wiser. I carry. No one gets upset. It's all good. Yet, they can still say to their anti-gun customers, "Look, we have a 'statement'! We don't like guns either!"

It really is the best of all worlds. Honestly, I don't think most businesses care about the issue one way or the other. They're trying to run their business and in the process trying not to upset, confuse, and piss off the customers regardless of the customers' stance on the issue.

The reality is, the average anti-gun person isn't going to freak out and scream if there's no "no guns" sign on the front of their local grocery store or nail boutique. But, concealed carriers will do one of three things...they'll ignore the sign (making it ineffective), they'll take their business elsewhere, or they'll talk to the manager about it/send email, etc. My guess is the manager doesn't want to deal with it. He's got a business to run.

Big nationwide companies like Starbucks, Trader Joe's and Toys R Us (God rest its soul) are under enormous pressure from left wing groups to "make a stand" against "gun violence" or be the subject of media outrage (can YOU believe a toy store allows customers to bring GUNNNNNS inside!!! What about the CHILDRENNNNNN?!?!?!), boycotts, picketers, etc. etc. Who wants that? Some companies have figured out they can placate the left by making a "request" or "statement" about not wanting guns in their businesses...while at the same time allowing concealed carry. Yes, if you're discovered carrying, they could politely ask you to leave. But, you're not going to be discovered in 99.9999999% of cases. And, there's no legal ramifications if you are discovered since they're not posted.

I thought Aldi reversed their position on this some time ago.

Aldis TraderJoes, Costco and several, others say no to bring guns in but do not post.

Basically they are playing both sides. They say one thing but unless they post, you can carry there.
