Witness Slips Needed
On 3/17/2017, the NRA announced passage in the US House of Representatives H.R. 1181, a bill designed to protect America's military veterans from abuse of their Second Amendment rights by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This bill complements NRA's earlier efforts through passage of a new law offering similar protections from abuse by the Social Security Administration. We congratulate them on achieving these important victories for those who have given so selflessly in defense of our country.
At the state level, IllinoisCarry is pleased to report that our military protection bill, SB1524 Concealed Carry Military, was given the go-ahead by the Senate Judiciary Committee to be considered by the Senate as a whole. This important step brings us closer to allowing active military members stationed in Illinois to apply for a concealed carry license and the means to protect themselves and their families. We thank Senator Chuck Weaver for his leadership on this bill and on SB2048 Firearm Card State's Attorneys which the committee also approved, the committee members who unanimously advanced these bills to the full Senate, and each of you who responded to our calls for witness slips supporting our military members.
In House Committee, HB2354 Lethal Order of Protection was also approved in spite of strenuous opposition by IllinoisCarry, the ISRA, and the NRA. This California style anti-gun legislation would allow a protection order to be filed by a mere acquaintance, against a gun owner for simply owning or purchasing a firearm or ammunition.
Please contact your State Representative. Urge them to oppose HB2354. Ask them to stand with us, prepared to fight this assault on our rights at every opportunity. Contact information can be found here.
Turning our attention to future matters, we ask for your services once again in opposing 4 bills scheduled for committee hearings this week: HB280 Protection Order Issuance which would allow government employees to file an order of protection against the wishes of the people they claim to represent, HB504 FOID Terrorist Watchlist – a denial of our right to due process, HB1810 Use Tax Firearms proposing a tax on firearms and parts added to the various taxes already paid on these items, and HB2541 Gun Dealer Licensing, a bill meant to close Illinois gun shops.
Committee Hearings are scheduled March 21 and March 23.
