If the pro-gun politicians proactively eliminate gun control laws, they lose an issue that they can run on. The specter of additional gun control is too useful for rallying votes to eliminate the possibility. They call that "job security." I've got mixed feelings about McConnell. On one hand, he made the Gorsuch appointment happen. For that, I am eternally grateful. On the other, he's been completely useless as far as legislation is concerned. And filling other judicial vacancies...Article III judges, so far they've confirmed three of 11 of his circuit judge nominees and only one of 22 district judge nominees. That may help explain McConnell's approval rating problem over in Kentucky. Last I checked it was at 18% and Trump's is something like 60% (also in Kentucky) so McConnell has a problem.
