AWB vote this week?

Can we call now and leave messages or would it be moot point unless we call in the morning?

Voicemail is a whole lot better than nothing. If this evening works much better for you than tomorrow morning, then by all means, call tonight, and know we all appreciate it.

Phone calls inbound at 6:55 pm B)

Do we have a generic pattern on what to say for those who might not be sure?

For the phone calls, I don't bother with actual arguments--I don't think they'll be listened to, anyway. I just give them my name, and say something along the lines of "I am calling to ask that Representative So and So vote against House Bill 758 and House Bill 4357, please."

P.S. I try to kind of emphasize the word "against," just to make sure there's no misunderstanding about which side of the issue I'm on.

Yeah, something simple is usually best. A friend of mine said, "what do I say?" I told him just to keep it simple and to the point.

When leaving a message after hours it just rings and then you hear a beep. There is no outgoing message. So do we just say what we want right then and that's that?

Hmm--I don't know what that means. I would expect to hear some kind of "We can't come to the phone right now" message.

No bills yet in the House, I've been watching since 12:30, anyone watching the senate for SB1007?

Although SB 1007 is (of course) a Senate bill, it already passed the Senate last spring, so if it comes up today, it will be in the House. If it passes there, it passes, and goes to the governor (for his certain signature).

...and probably sent directly by courier for the governor to sign into law that day!

What are some of the cities/towns in these districts for those on this call list?

I want to be able to give the correct answer, need the answers by tonight. 04/15/08 ! B)

I can't put together anything like a comprehensive list (or even come close to doing so), but here are where their district offices are located (which I assume are generally the biggest municipalities in their districts):

Sandy Cole -- Grayslake

Paul Froelich -- Schaumburg

Sidney Mathias -- Arlington Heights

Ruth Munson -- Elgin

Charles Jefferson -- Rockford

Patricia Bellock -- Westmont

Sandra Pihos -- Glen Ellyn

Michael Madigan -- Chicago

I had those, but thought that possibly (don't know why) they could have their office outside of their district.

Your efforts are definitely appreciated, Drylok.

By the way, we haven't been talking about it as much lately, but let's not forget about SB 1007. That one is closer to passage than all the others (since it's already passed in the Senate).

Just about every anti-gun group directly involved in what's going on in Illinois (Brady Bunch, ICHV, and ICPGV) repeatedly mention HB 758 and SB 1007 as their top priorities. Defeating those needs to be our top priority.

I mentioned 1007 in my calls today. I DID get that number right!!!!

It's the scariest of the group. It only needs 60 votes and a signature from the Hot Rod and it's in!!!

I'd like to add a couple names to our contact list:

and

Rep. James H. Meyer

Tomorrow could very well be decisive, folks. The other side would dearly love to beat us on the anniversary of the VA Tech atrocity. We need to light the phones up tomorrow.

Asked my wife to reset the alarm clock to 8:30 when she gets up in the morning. I'll be on the horn before 9:00.

Once again it's 4357, 758 and 1007 right?

All of the listed Reps will have this missive on their fax machines for reading over their morning latte (emphasis added).

Dear Representative

I am writing to express my opposition to HB4375, HB578, HB873, and SB1007. These gun prohibition bills will be as ineffective as the expired Federal Assault Weapons ban and the Cook County Assault Weapons Ban.

Frankly, I don't understand why it is so hard to realize that someone intent upon committing murder will be unconcerned by a weapons prohibition law. In fact, these weapons prohibition bills, if enacted into law, will only create a black market for so-called "Assault Weapons" much like that created during Prohibition and much like that created by our current "War" on drugs.

Was alcohol eliminated during Prohibition? Are drugs eliminated from our streets by our drug prohibition laws? Similarly, the effect of these bills will be to create a lucrative black market for so-called "Assault Weapons" that will only make criminals richer.

Wasn't Al Capone nothing more than a two-bit hood until Prohibition landed in his lap? Look at the violence that Prohibition and the current "War" on drugs have engendered. This violence will be replicated in the gun smuggling world if bans are enacted.

Since black marketeers do not engage in legal markets, they cannot gain market share in the usual way and hence rely upon violence.

Please realize that you only punish law-abiding gun owners that are, in fact, the only people that will abide by these laws.

On March 11, the law-abiding gun owners of Illinois showed their resolve and strength by descending upon Springfield in such numbers that Emil Jones was forced to cancel committee meetings early so that the Senators who feared to face their constituents could flee the Capitol.

Please carefully consider your votes on these bills. The law-abiding gun owners of Illinois are beginning to flex their muscles and will be heard now, or on election day.

Thank You,

Those are the ones. Remember that 1007 is SB, while the other two are HB.

Fed. Farmer, that's HB 758, rather than 578.

Fed Farm, it also looks like you have 4375 and it should be 4357 shouldn't it?? Dyslexia must be contagious!!

I'm having a terrible time remembering those bill numbers for some reason!

Sent this to all the "usiual" suspects last week.

Dear Senator******

Dear Representative****

So-called assault weapons have been misrepresented in such an irresponsible way, that I’m writing to clarify what the term really means. The Assault Weapons Ban was instituted under thought that violence associated with firearms is really a broad based public health concern, not entirely a criminal act and should be held to the same health and safety standards as prescription drugs or seat belts. Individual rights or Constitutionality has no bearing. Congress called upon the BATF, whose expertise is law enforcement, not firearms, for guidelines in defining an “assault” weapon; a term that is foreign to even military manuals and training with reference to weapons. The US Army trains that a soldier who initiates an engagement against an enemy is in an attack posture. If the enemy initiates the engagement, the soldier is in a defensive posture. Is the soldier’s rifle a weapon of attack or defense? The word assault in military terms is a verb, not an adjective. Air Assault school is training involving action. If the military does not understand the word assault, we’re all in trouble.

Under the BATF definition, an assault weapon has distinguishing features that set it apart from ordinary firearms. One of those distinguishing features is a bayonet lug; a lump of metal that, basically, permits a bayonet to be affixed to the barrel. I find it nothing less than amazing how a lump of metal. Or anything else cosmentic, can transform an ordinary firearm into a weapon capable of destroying humanity en mass. Such magic must be the envy of Disney engineers that can only, at best, dream of that kind of computer animation.

Sincerely,

*** ** *****

The darned video / audio feed appears to be locked up - I got noth'n but a still shot and no audio!!

Is it working for anyone else??

WHAT'S GOING ON - ANYTHING???

They are late

Nothing unusual there.

I've seen them go as much as an hour late.

I expect the reason they are late is one or both parties are caucusing right now.

I'm somewhat expecting the Dems are the cause today. Bunch of Chicago city politicians are there and they probably have them mopes in the Caucus trying to convince downstate Dems to give their constituents the finger.
