Well, although I work from home, I'm heading downtown towards the office tomorrow for an after-work going away gathering for someone near Merchandise Mart. Guess I better knife up, and take the pepper spray, too.

The incident, Schmidt said, has strengthened his views in opposition of Illinois' concealed carry laws.

"And now it's justified for us to be carrying weapons," Schmidt said. "If they are, so should we."

Don't those editors know how to write? Their statement, as written, means that his opposition to a carry law has strengthened. But the context implies that his support for carry laws has strengthened.

I often think it may be less likely to be attacked if one is walking dogs. But despite those thoughts ... I always carry when I walk the dogs. Well, I pretty much follow one of Ayoob's suggestions, which is if you are going to carry a gun, then ALWAYS carry a gun. It is HIGH time for Illinois ... we all know that!

I read it the same way as you...you would think the ones that make their living writing would be better at proof reading their work.

Was having breakfast with the wife this morning watching 5 news. Let's see...this guy got sliced open. A cab driver got car jacked and some guy shot some other guy, gang violence apparently.

Just another normal day.

The news media is not out to tell the truth, but to make money. I carry a firearm 24/7 and will not disarm for anyone! If someone does not like that, they have a problem, I don't!

Clearly what we need is a knife registry and a mandatory training and licensing scheme before anyone is allowed to own a knife in Chicago. Also knife training classrooms should be banned within the city limits, they are hazardous.

He probably "did it for Trayvon".

Any public official who is an opponent of concealed carry should have to regularly walk through regular neighborhoods (or the worst) without their cadre of body guards. Rahm?

I was thinking that he probably used a butter knife, they're the Saturday Night Special's of knives.

That is a bone chilling story. I wish him a speedy recovery. I am glad he to see that he brought up concealed carry in the video interview.

If you watch the video instead of reading the poorly worded article, the video shows Michael Schmidt clearly stating:

"I'm all for carrying concealed weapons. I think Chicago needs to release this ban. I believe it's unconstitutional, it's unjust. And now, it's justified for us to be carrying weapons. If they are, so should we."

I think we also need a minimum melting point for knives and the sale of brass shims should be banned unless you show a state id and sign a registry. After all look how easy it would be to use a grinder to make a brass knife.

The article didn't say what breed, but I'd guess this guy needs a bigger dog.

I'm gonna test it out. I don't think you could run up behing me walking my 11 1/2 year old lab or the almost 6 month old. The puppy would be really no help, but the old guy will at the least make you go home and change your shorts.

If I believe there's something no good going on somewhere in the back of our property, besides not going empty handed, that old muscled up lab goes too.

That's why my family has a 95 pound german shepherd. We have no problem taking him for walks at night.

Rahm Emanual and McCarthy keep pushing the mantra that they need to get guns off the street to make streets safer, and people just aren't buying it anymore.

I think citizens are losing faith in government's ability to deal with criminals. They're coming to grips with the frightening fact that the police cannot protect each individual all the time. And it's dawning on them that they're not safer by being disarmed

The video shows a black border collie-ish pooch.

His dog wasn't small but it wasn't an attack dog either. I had German Shepards all my life, and one night when a guy tried to force his way into the front door, our Shepard went for his throat. The only thing that saved him was that he jerked back and the screen door shut, and our dog couldn't get a purchase on his throat with the screen covering his neck.

My cousin lives by Central Park Ave & Diversy and a guy attacked her, reached over her fence and started strangling her, the assailant didn't see my cousin's dog - he's an American Bull Dog / Staffordshire Terrier / pit bull type mix. But the dog saved her life. it's too bad he couldn't get over the fence - they never caught the guy so he's still out there.

I think the dog in the story may have saved his owner's life, the dog put himself between the slasher and Schmidt.

Would be a good time for a Wrigleyville area CCW Town Hall meeting.

when the time is right, and I don't know when that's gonna be....I'll see if I can't have a chat with him and see if how he feels about the no-carry situation, and see if he'd like to take the next step. After all, he's my fellow neighbor.

Beez ... you should VERY MUCH do that! After all, the gun ban people try to make mileage by using crime victims. To me it speaks volumes when crime victims become advocates of lawful defense. But I'd approach him cautiously ... don't hit him over the head with the carry issue ... let him come to that conclusion on his own. Groom him into advocacy if you can.

I heard him say in the interview video that he already agrees with conceal carry. The video was cut just after that statement though. His comments were, "I'm all for carried and concealed weapons. I think Chicago needs to release this ban. I believe it's unconstitutional. It's unjust. And now it's justified for us to be carrying weapons." This was aired by NBC no less, unbelievable that got through. Listen for yourself. go to the first post for the link.

Yeah, Dilbert. You are totally correct. He's clearly "on board" with defending himself. We need more folks like him ... folks Mr. Schmidt and Mrs. Shepard ... advocating for the right to bear arms. Why? Because people can put themselves directly in their shoes, and then it hits them that it makes sense to want to protect yourself.

Good One. We need to put the average man in front of average people to show them what is happeneing. I hope Illinoiscarry approaches this person and gets him on board, because we need people like him.

i'm on it.

I will treat this carefully.

The connection we have first and foremost, is we're neighbors...and It's a tight neighborhood.

I will try to get an opportunity to meet him soon, i am sure he is still processing this whole thing, and he's probably got quite a few characters up in his stuff....

I'll certainly invite him to IC....allow any interest in advocacy to begin organically.

I am a certified pistol instructor, so I am planning to offer him a class and qualify him for an AZ or FL permit for free.

If anyone from IC has an opportunity to contact Mr Schmidt before I do, please pass along my offer.
