what was the vote on the detention center issue?

55 YES - 61 NO and a couple present I think - postponed consideration.

At least Acevedo took a loss before going home.

Never got in the record...it is bottled up in committee.

No, but it looks like Madigan won't let it hit the floor.

Ike, the only problem with that is the lawsuits would have to start all over again. In my heart of hearts I do agree with your submission though.

SB2539 isn't even on the calendar. There's pretty much a 0% chance it will come up for a vote, no?

If Speaker Madigan would relaese the bill there is still time to run it.

It's entirely up to him at thispoint.

Interesting that last year Madigan let a carry bill come to the floor when he knew the votes weren't there to pass it...but this year he isn't taking that chance.

Maybe he knows this time we have the 71 votes.

Farmer - are we certain that it won't be brought up? Did I miss something procedural? Should I stop listening, or is there still hope, even the slightest faint hope, that it could come up today?

Isn't there a way to sue Madigan for blocking a bill from a vote just because he dosen't like it? If not, sounds like a good idea for a bill next session. HB1 "The speaker can not keep a bill from a floor vote without good reason." And NOT, "Just Because".

No, it's over Ty Court case is being heard next Friday I think it is

Why? Did I miss something procedural?

No, the bill was never let out of committee.

Posted
Talonap, he is not breaking any rules by doing this and it would take a constitutional amendment to fix it. But I agree, NO speaker should ever block a bill from going to the floor ever.

It's stuck in committee man - the Speaker has to determine to bring a bill to a reading out of committee. It's just the reality right now, and there's not way Madigan is going to let it come to the floor today. He's scared.

I don't think you can sue but you can scream and shout and slam your microphone down - that you can do.

Damn right, and I welcome more of that

As long as they are in session there is a faint chance. Also, there is always the chance of a special session.

Keep in mind though that if it sits until the Fall session, there won't be enough time to override a veto (should Quinn fulfill one of his promises) if he vetoes it late enough. He has 60 days to sit on it and if the veto session ends earlier than his 60 day limit, he can veto it with no chance of an override (at least no chance to my knowledge).
