lieut89 Posted January 3, 2012 at 01:46 PM Posted January 3, 2012 at 01:46 PM The shooting renewed debate about a federal law that made it legal for people to take loaded weapons into national parks. The 2010 law made possession of firearms subject to state gun laws. Bill Wade, the outgoing chair of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, said Congress should be regretting its decision. "The many congressmen and senators that voted for the legislation that allowed loaded weapons to be brought into the parks ought to be feeling pretty bad right now," said Wade. Wade called Sunday's fatal shooting a tragedy that could have been prevented. He hopes Congress will reconsider the law that took effect in early 2010, but doubts that will happen in today's political climate. Calls and emails to the National Rifle Association requesting comment were not immediately returned on Monday. The NRA said media fears of gun violence in parks were unlikely to be realized, the NRA wrote in a statement about the law after it went into effect. "The new law affects firearms possession, not use," it said. The group pushed for the law saying people have a right to defend themselves against park animals and other people. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57350970/body-found-believed-that-of-mt-rainier-gunman/ And how many people were murdered in National Parks prior to enacting the law? More than enough. This guy wasn't carrying legally, as he had already shot 4 people outside of the National Park. He had body armor with him for Pete's sake.
3ddiver Posted January 3, 2012 at 02:24 PM Posted January 3, 2012 at 02:24 PM I am pretty sure a law saying that no weapons are allowed would have stopped this guy. He already broke a law saying you cant kill someone.

This guy wasn't carrying legally, as he had already shot 4 people outside of the National Park. He had body armor with him for Pete's sake. How do the antis get so much press? Does anyone really believe that if guns were not legal in National Parks, this guy would've stopped his killing spree? Why does such a ridiculous viewpoint even get listened to by anyone?!!! He was intent on committing murder; a law prohibiting loaded firearms would make absolutely no difference to the killer! It would instead just disarm all his possible intended victims. It's very sad that he murdered a park ranger, but a “no guns allowed” sign certainly wouldn’t stop him. He wasn’t carrying legally anyway! Bill Wade is talking out his rear! Of course, this is CBS, so what did I expect?
klippr Posted January 3, 2012 at 03:28 PM Posted January 3, 2012 at 03:28 PM Sorry guys had the law still been in place he probably would have turned around and not gone into the park. Come on if it was illegal to have guns you know he would have picked a different hiding spot after shooting people at the hause party...Duhhh. Common sense........God I love the media and their one side
DoYouFeelLucky Posted January 3, 2012 at 04:03 PM Posted January 3, 2012 at 04:03 PM Was the park ranger armed? I haven't read extensively on this story, however I haven't seen that fact noted in what I have read.

From what I read, the perp began shooting immediately and the Ranger wasn't even able to exit the vehicle.

samy12386 Posted January 4, 2012 at 02:53 AM Posted January 4, 2012 at 02:53 AM Personally I'm surprised they are crying about guns in parks since this guy was a veteran who supposedly had some PTSD. It wasn't long ago the Brady's were complaining about combat vets being aloud to buy guns

She was a police officer. When he shot her, they couldn't get to her for 30 min. because she was caught in the crossfire between the BG and the other officers, that's most likely why she died. The stories that i read about this also stated that the park rangers had to rush through the park and get the people out that were camping and hiking at the time so they also wouldn't become victims if they ran into this guy, i wonder how many could have been armed, and could have saved themselves?
